Conquering the Kitchen Line: The Pivot
The kitchen line in pickleball can be a battleground. Those tricky balls that land just beyond the baseline can leave you scrambling to reach them. But there's a better way than simply backing off the line and giving up valuable space.
Matt Manasse - Pickleball Coach to the Stars, breaks down the essential pivot technique that allows you to stay in the game and handle those kitchen balls with confidence. Watch the video here.
The Mistake
The biggest mistake Matt sees players make is simply backing completely off the line. This might seem like the natural reaction, but it concedes precious space and puts you at a disadvantage.
Instead, we want to utilize a pivot foot to maintain control and stay close to the action.
The Pivot Technique
Here's how to execute the perfect pivot:
Step | Description |
---|---|
Identify your dominant side | Are you a forehand or backhand player? |
Footwork | When hitting a forehand from the kitchen line, use the opposite foot as your pivot foot. So, if you're right-handed, your left foot would be the pivot. |
Paddle control | Crucially, don't take your paddle back with you as you pivot. Keep it extended in front of your body. This allows for a powerful push forward when returning the shot. |
Repeat for backhand |
The same principle applies to backhand shots. Step off the line with your dominant foot (right foot for righties), keeping the paddle out in front for an efficient return. |
Benefits of the Pivot Technique
By mastering this pivot technique, you'll be able to:
- Stay close to the line, maintaining pressure on your opponents.
- React quicker to those tricky kitchen balls.
- Generate more power on your returns with a controlled paddle movement.
The kitchen line doesn't have to be a nightmare. With a little practice and the proper pivot technique, you'll be handling those low balls like a pro. So, get out on the court, start incorporating the pivot, and take your pickleball game to the next level!
In addition to the pivot technique, here are some other tips for mastering the kitchen line:
- Communicate with your partner: Make sure you and your partner are on the same page about who is going to take the kitchen line shots.
- Be prepared to move quickly: Kitchen line shots often come quickly, so be ready to react fast.
With a little practice, you'll be a kitchen line conqueror in no time!
